Bridge Blog Photo Howrah Bridge Calcutta IndiaOur thanks to Rosie Shakespear (Ro5ie on Flickr) for sharing this great shot of the Howrah Bridge in Calcutta, India. (To see a larger version of this photo on Flickr, please click here.)

The following information on the Howrah Bridge is from Wikipedia:

Howrah Bridge, also known as the Rabindra Setu, is a bridge over the Hoogli River in West Bengal, India. It is so named as it links the city of Howrah, near Howrah Station, to its twin city of Kolkata (Calcutta). The bridge was built between 1937 and 1943 to replace a bridge from 1874, and is said to be the busiest bridge in the world. It is 97 metres high and 705 metres long. It is a cantilever truss bridge, constructed entirely by riveting, without nuts or bolts. It is currently used as a road bridge, but previously had a tram route as well.

The Howrah Bridge also has sister bridges over the river at different points, namely the Vidyasagar Setu and the Vivekananda Setu.

Vidyasagar Setu (commonly known as the Second Howrah Bridge or Second Hooghly Bridge) is a bridge over the Hooghly River in West Bengal, India. It links the city of Howrah to its twin city of Kolkata. The bridge is a toll bridge for vehicles. It is a cable-stayed bridge, with a main span of a little over 457 metres, and a deck 35 metres wide. Construction started in 1978 and the bridge was finally inaguarated in October, 1992.

Vivekananda Setu (also known as Bally Bridge) is a bridge over the Hoogli River in West Bengal, India. It links the city of Howrah, at Bally, to its twin city of Kolkata, at Dakhineshwar. The bridge serves both road and rail.
